Sistine Chapel - Vatican City, Italy
Raffaele De Vita was part of the team of lighting designers at FABERtechnica, based in Rome, and was also a part of a wider group of European Consultancies that worked on different aspects of the project. Layers of lighting were designed to fulfil different purposes incorporated within motorised light fittings. The first layer illuminates the detail and wonder of the art - ensuring the art is the focal point for visitors. The lighting enhances the space, allowing the viewer to obtain a wider perception and see the detail and quality of all artworks. The Second type of lighting is called “Gala” and it is turned on when the Sistine Chapel is used for institutional and formal events. It is only in this case that the lighting is directed towards people and the lower part of the Chapel. The use of high-quality LED fittings constructed the ideal spectrum of light: the shade of white that best enhances the colour palette used by Michelangelo and other artists.
